WHY I miss Gardner Martin, the Original ER Owner… :-(

For the record, I have (HAPPILY) owned an Easy Racers TE, EZ1, Gold Rush Replica, (Polished Aluminum) and a Gold Rush Titanium recumbent. All my ER bikes were a DREAM and I was never disappointed in any of them. When Gardner Martin passed on, it was like a personal Family member loss to me. Yea, he was that kind of inspirational person! There have been some concerns raised about ER these days, as a result to some posts seen at BROL. Hi there Easy Racers - Where Are You? Is one of the posts; that apparently got so HEATED, it got locked by the head honcho BROL master, Bryan. There was actually a thread before this; that also got locked. The issue is where is Easy Racers and are they still in business? Their establishment apparently… got broken into and now there seems to be no one around… and there has been little communication forthcoming from anyone, representing ER. Even the so-called last post, by Bryan (As he locked the thread) shows a rather inconclusive response from the ER organization. OK, there was a break in…, they are trying to re-set things up and……………………….. No mention as to even “IF” they will be back to normal operations or before too long. This has got to be un-nerving for ER owners and even more specifically for their dealers. (Especially if they have $$$ plunked down for ordered product / bikes) While I mean no disrespect towards the latest ER owners, they obviously are not descendants of Gardner Martin! At least with him, you always know where you stood and what was REALLY going on!

I was looking forward to registering for the upcoming bike event, Ride With A Heart, being put on by my Special Friend Kerry (Pinkie). To register, you have to go through active.com and I attempted to do so, when I saw the so-called service fee charge… Anyway I tried to proceed through the registration, but my request was declined! YEAAAA! I realize the online service places make their money by doing these registrations; BUT for me, that just adds more cost to something, (While padding the pockets of those online service with my $$$) and TAINTS the good will desire to contribute to the worthy cause. Unlike others, I do watch my expenses; to avoid facing a wall of debt. Additionally, I have signed up for other worthy causes, only to find out (Again) the majority of my fee paid, went into the pockets of the service used to collect the registrations and not specifically to the intended cause. I would very much like to do that event and some others; BUT I’m not EVER going to register, using these online services! I’ll write the event organizers a check or pay cash, PERIOD! If that’s not suitable; I don’t need to be part of their event!

Hello Jan, Thanks for your email and remember, no question is dumb! Nice to see you today and I managed to crank out a nice 70 miler, in preparation for the 24 hours of Sebring, February 18/19th. Not only do I need to get the miles in, but so do my bike light batteries! 12 hours of that event will be in the dark and on a race track, (Sebring – an old airport) that likewise is VERY DARK. Unlike other raceways, there is no lighting and so you better have a really good light system; if you intend to do this event. So that’s why you saw my lights during the daylight hours; as I’m conditioning the batteries, so they will be dialed in for the event. For now, (With my present battery) I can do about 3.5 hours at 1600 lumens! (Brightness) BUT I plan to drop that down to 1200 Lumens and thus my hours run time should be in the 4 to 6 hour range. So the 2 batteries I have now, (plus 2 that came with my lights) should be the perfect setup.

It is with GREAT SADNESS to report one of my long time friends that had sold me more recumbent bikes than anyone else has passed on. Mark Gregoire of Atlantic Bicycles. Here is a link to his obituary.
Mark was a really Class Act Guy and embraced recumbents wholeheartedly. He ran one of the few shops that offered one of the largest selections of bents, in South Florida. I'm proud to admit I purchased 11 recumbents from this person and everyone of them was a wonderful experience. Nothing was impossible for this person to go and find for you, to keep your recumbent fix in high gear! Pictured is your truly (In my parade Flag float jersey; next to Mr. Class himself! Mark, I'm really going to miss you; BUT I know you are surly cruising around on a bent in heaven!!! :-)

You know, I have no ill feeling towards law enforcement; in fact I respect them very much, have a lot of them as friends and I ride with quite a few officers on some of my rides! The very nature of my job; has me interacting with them from time to time.I likewise respect organizations that put together events to honor those REAL Hero's that have sadly been lost, while protecting us. I also respect the fact, it’s your event, it's your rules and you can include or exclude whoever you want. But this post at BROL… Recumbents not allowed just leaves a REAL sour taste in my mouth. I truly wonder, if those that gave their life, to serve and protect “ALL” the public at large; harbored the same selective attitude, that this event obviously supports. Ohhhh, if you ride a upright bike, I can assist you; but if you ride a recumbent; NOPE, you are SOL… I wish their event well; but I can’t help but think about those they are honoring; who are surly looking down from Heaven and lowering their heads in SHAME, for an event that discriminates…

I guess I could have done an update at the bottom of the original post; BUT… what the heck! Contrary to what WAS initially posted; old EZ DID NOT acquire the CF Aero 2.0; as originally stated. The deposit was put down; the bike arrived at the bike shop and then… well a routine eye exam clearly… put the hold on that acquisition. EEEK, I gotta get glasses! I’ve managed to do without them for so long; but now, the time has some. Having said this; am I really SAD? WELL… yes and NO. I would have truly LOVED to experience a 700c CF bike (And would still like to) BUT, where to put it? I don’t have the largest homestead, you know. And it will SIT and then have to compete for ride time with my other 2 trusty steeds; my Ti Aero and Tailwind. Speaking of my Ti Aero, it’s going to get a complete makeover and get ready for Sebring! Keep in mind; this bike is not made anymore and the only ones available or used and reused ones come available. Those BLUE plastic bikes are ALL OVER the place anyway. If I have a mishap on my Ti bike; probably not going to hurt that BOMB proof frame; but on a carbon fiber frame??? As for as the other post of me kicking my beloved fire engine to the curb; it’s stays! Simply because the effort and commitment was made and I honestly don’t have any REAL regrets in my decision… for now…

1. EZ will again… (For the 1234599000 time) reveal his invention failures!

2. Regretfully, there will be a number of recumbent bike shop closings and maybe at least one major recumbent manufacturer, shuttering it’s doors.

3. A recumbent entry will finish 1st at RAAM 2012, but will not win the overall single person bicycling division.

4. Recumbent trikes will still dominate the market.

5. A beloved Rans Tailwind will be replaced for a trendy duel 20” tricked out Ti bike.

6. And a BONUS prediction!!! Earthlings will still be around, after the pending Mayan prediction apocalypse on December 21, 2012! Here is a countdown meter for that!

Terminally Ill New Hampshire Boy Ordered Out of Safety Seat on Southwest Flight… Here we have a flight staff member that obviously has visions of wanting to be someone in charge and thus has no concerns about tainting a terminally child's remaining days of life as well as traumatizing the child's parents, on what may be this young persons last flight. This is something that obviously should have been escalated to higher authority personnel, instead of (BEFORE) acted on at ground zero. Congratulations Southwest Airlines, you clearly are not a people or specifically child friendly service airline and thus you all whole heartedly rate an EZ Biker SUCKS BIG TIME proclamation!

While visiting Facebook today, I happen onto a post by the Recumbent Journal about a certain Recumbent Friendly… bike shop that has REALLY strange operating hours. NOW mind you, it’s none of my business how anyone chooses to run their company; BUT… don’t you have to kind of keep the door OPEN, for $$$ income generating customers to come in? And what if you have purchased a bike there and now want or need service on it? Send them an email requesting their MIGHTY VIP presence, to be able to rewardingly accommodate you? Sorry, I don’t get it!!! I’m not purposely showing the bike shop name; but you can see who, at this link.

OT–Christmas Mass, Kneeling Straight & Sister Audrey…

Once again I joined the million+ 2 times a year visiting Catholics to my local Catholic Church, last night for Midnight Mass. And once again, like it was just yesterday, I kneeled in the pew, straight up, not slouching like seen in the photo. I have good old Sister Audrey to Thank for that… Every time there was even one of us, kneeling slouched in the pew, there was this quiet SNAP of the finger and Sister Audrey, motioning us to kneel straight up! Must have been caught doing that 100+ times; but… I guess it finally sunk in… Thanks Sister Audrey. And once again, Church was not packed like it use to be and the opened overflow areas, were mostly vacant. I was part of the many that didn’t realize the change of prayer responses had been done; so I responded “And also with you; when it should have been, and with your Spirit.” And lastly, I noticed something rather different this year, when it came to Communion. Back in the packed over flowing days, numerous church goers, would blow out of there, just before or during Communion time or just after they had received the Holy Sacrament. That didn’t happen this year. The crowd stayed and took in the whole Mass event, even towards the end of Mass when we get to hear Father Foudy’s traditional “Remember there’s only 2 types of people out on the road now, drunks and Catholics; so be careful going home.

I’m sure I gave a lot of joggers and cyclists some laughter today; as I did the infamous fall off the bike trick (Arty Johnson trike fall over from Laughin?) at the traffic light just past the Boca Bridge head South today… I started off from a stop millions of times and never had an issue; except TWICE now. Too much torque on the right pedal; (AGAIN) which caused my rear wheel to come dislodged from the frame dropouts. Re-aligned the rear wheel and I was embarrassingly on my way again! 2011 Christmas Eve FUN………

Yes Annie, I’m sorry to say, there really is a GRENCH out there this Christmas! After receiving a call from a long time friend, who is now left to SCRAMBLE to find a specific special gift for their child, (Previously purchased on Black Friday from Best Buy) only NOW to receive a cancelation notice from them, (Again) NOW just before Christmas. AHHH, I can see the legal community ramping up for a mega FRAUD lawsuit here, and justifiably so! This retailer obviously didn’t take note of what happens when you PISS OFF an abundance of your customers, like Netflix did a while back. I’m quite sure, this ordeal won’t go away for awhile; especially when little Annie finds out on Christmas Morning, that the wonderful gift she was expecting, isn't there, thanks to the Best Buy GRINCH… SHAME ON YOU Best Buy!!!

Admittedly, there are all kinds of lights available for bicyclists out there; but this little puppy has really caught my eye. This is the Tovatec Mini Torch and I truly know why they call it that! As I continue to pull my gear together for Sebring; I have been looking for a nice helmet light. (Yep, I intend to use one for Sebring, to help me in the DARK turns) I initially chose a Tovatec wide angle torch, that features the same 220 Lumens out put, only in a little larger size light. This light is truly a BRIGHT torch and lit up my whole back yard! Forget about a helmet mount; I had intend to have this as a back light for the front of my bike. BUT doing a little more research, I found that the Mini Torch, offers a few more things, besides the same 220 lumens light output. It’s smaller in size and you have 3 settings. Full, 220 Lumens for about “””8 – 10””” hours run time on 2 CR123 batteries, a 30% light setting and a blinking selection. I’m about to order 2 of these puppies for use on my helmet from Amazon.com. Now of course you might be wondering how to mount these little beasties? Not a problem, as you can get a special flashlight mount by Two Fish, from Amazon.com. A GREAT light for about $50.00??? HO HO HO!!!

I also would like to take a moment and sincerely apologize to the joggers on the sidewalk that had to SCATTER when I veered into them, heading South before the Boca bridge. It was like a hand just pushed me from the bike lane, on the grass and onto the sidewalk! I hope the cyclists tomorrow; doing the inlet challenge will be VERY CAREFUL and alert for these WIND gusts!

OK EZ Biker Friends, gift giving kinda really does not float my boat; based on SO MUCH COMMERCIALISM that’s now taken over the REAL Reason for Christmas; which is our Lords Birthday! Having said this; I have gotten an unusual large number of email from people truly wondering what kind of gift idea should their buy for their bicyclist family member or friends. SOOOO, I will be sharing some of my personal thoughts and opinions on gift suggestions! If you have a cyclist that does a lot of early morning or late evening bicycling, Magicshine lights are an AFFORDABLE NO Brainer, for the biggest bang for your buck. For the upcoming 24 hours of Sebring; I’m using the Magicshine MJ-872 lighting system, which I paid ONLY $149.00, for a 1600 Lumens light system! I purchased this from Light Junction.com who are really great folks to do business with. They also offer numerous battery selections to go with this BRIGHT light! The 1 thing I have an issue with is the rubber band they use to lock the light onto your handlebar or light mount. Being Old School; I like a NICE solid light mount for my lights. BUT there’s a source that actually offers a really nice light mounting system, bikeempowerment.com. Here’s a great video; that demonstrates their nifty Magic Shine light mount.

Hello Eric & Julie, thanks for your nice email. The Kids In Distress Inlet Challenge event (Sunday, December 4, 2011) is a good event, which I have participated in, a few times. SADLEY, I’m probably not going to be able to do this event this year; as I’m committing my $$$ to doing Sebring next year. The other reason is the minimum donation amount ($100.00) required to participate, along with the $45.00 registration fee. In this present day and time; I honestly don’t have an abundance of friends that could spare any kind of $ donation. Now if the event allowed a minimum of $25 or maybe $50.00; I would gladly pull that out of my pocket, to do the event. Event fund raisers are a good thing; but I believe they need to seriously understand how really TIGHT $$$ is these days, all the people out of work and the sheer costs of things going up all the time. It would be really nice if they could make the events more donation friendly; which would result in more cyclist participation and still a decent $$$ generated.

At Bikeportland.org there a really novel idea I read from their Monday Roundup section, on blue stickers, like you see in the photo here. Quoting from bikeportland.org: “The cycling coach at Lindsey Wilson College in Columbia, Kentucky has launched a bicycle friendly sticker campaign for homes and businesses who want to support the college's racing team. But as the coach will tell you, the idea wasn't his and it didn't come from the team - it came from the people who live on the rural roads where the team rides.” Here’s the actual website link: WeAreBikeFriendly.com So if a cyclists see one of these stickers on a house or business; they can be assured, that establishment is a bike friendly place to visit and / or offer bicycle support. While I normally would offer everyone a nice, cute Happy Thanksgiving post today, I’m just not in the MOOD to do so! THIS *&^%$#* world is just SO SCREWED up and everyone is obsessed with $$$. Despite millions that don’t even have a job and probably won’t even be able to afford a nice Thanksgiving dinner! BUT HEY! that’s not stopping the GREEDY MONEY HUNGERY retailers out there! To our store employees, screw your nice Thanks Giving dinner; you have to come in to work, man your store counter and suck as much $$$ as you can out of customers! (And be here by 10 PM, Thanksgiving evening or earlier, so we can be the 1st to suck in those customers with $$$) I honestly won’t be surprised if some retailers don’t offer an in store Thanksgiving dinner! Come in for some free Turkey and shop while you are carrying a drumstick and sipping on tea!
