Uprights can't climb, either…

BROL poster wingbatwu posted this thread; as a smack back for recumbents Achilles' heel of the ability to climb. Himmm, why in the world would you even be on a bike in this kind of land area? :-P  Here’s the link.

Hello EZ, have you seen the BROL forum thread: Latest Bicycling Magazine Recumbent Bashing? Looks like this is going to really take off. So EZ, if recumbents were ever to pose a serious threat to the DF industry, what tall tell signs would there be? Signed Jan.

Hi Jan, Thanks for your email and YES, I have visited that thread a few times so far. Am I offended, outraged or ready to do a verbal smack down on the publication??? Well, to be perfectly honest and perhaps SURPRISINGLY candied… “NO”! :-O  You really have to step back and take a look at the BIGGER picture. The Diamond frame industry is a MULTIMILLION (Maybe billion) dollar industry. When you have THAT kind of monetary influence, clout or power, you can get whatever you want. (The 800 lb gorilla in the room syndrome) And this influence stretches beyond the publication sector and well into actual bicycling companies organizations and sanctioned competitive events. And if that’s not enough going for them; they are stacked up against an alternative bicycling industry that has absolutely NO CLUE how to market their product. (Even though it’s a product that successfully addresses every complaint or issue diamond frame cyclists have whined about forever about road bikes.) Based on what I have just stated; I doubt bents will ever be any kind of serious (marketing) threat to the diamond frame industry; BUT what if? I think you would probably see those bent companies that are going gang busters in the market, to quickly be brought out or acquired by any number of your diamond frame conglomerates. The DF company could then choose to shelve the newly acquired bent company product (Thus adding a little more longevity to their AGE OLD technology) or get the jump on their competitors with the NOW Product that's gaining popularity, consumer sales wise.

However, should the recumbent industry ever be blessed with a mega billionaire, (Fascinated with these niche machines) who has equal if not more $$$ then the DF industry; (And has accomplished marketing skills); you might just see the consumer industry finally seriously embracing recumbents.  I’m incline to believe your now anti bicycling publications and various sanctioned bicycle organizations and events, might likewise start warming up to recumbents; especially if they can get their $$$ recumbent sponsored fix… :-) :-) :-)

Trikes are NOT 100% fall over proof! :-0

Quote from BROL poster Roberto: Weekend test gone slightly wrong<g>

“This series was shot by my wife while I was test riding a new homebuilt trike last weekend. I was doing fast figure eights around two large trees at a nearby park when my inside front wheel struck a protruding root. A slippery seat cover resulted in the surprise rollover. No harm done!<g>”

I was a BAD boy today… :-@

WELL I rolled up to the ZMotion's Bike Beach, Beer BBQ event today under very gray clouds and BLUSTRY winds. Hooked up with two of my fellow workers, who were on their bents and we started off in the B class for a 62 mile endeavor. Me and my fellow 2 amigo's had previously discussed keeping a nice 16 / 18 mph speed, while letting everyone else go. We did let everyone else go, BUT it was SO WINDY, I managed to keep the agreed pace; BUT my 2 counter parts just couldn’t hold it with the MEGA CROSSWINDS. I was already a half mile ahead as we approached the Light House Point bridge. WELLLLL, I should have dropped the pace back down; BUT… I was in my zone and proceeded to keep on trucking. I did manage to see them, as I had already done the turn around and John at least managed to catch up with me; but now I just wanted to keep my pace and kept rolling. John did the RIGHT thing and dropped back to rejoin the other bent rider. I managed to hook up with a group of 7 riders and we kept a 22 mph pace, pretty much all the way back to the start. Well they kept the pace; BUT my weighty Aero Spokes took their toll on my legs and I faded from the bunch about 2 miles from the finish. Upon arrival we were greeted with cheers and bells, but it was now only 10 AM. So technically there was no beer until noon (I don’t drink alcohol anyway) and the Barbeque clearly was in no site to be seen. The skies were looking even more ominous; so I elected to head back (With now LOTS of lovely beach traffic) to the barn, whereby no 10 minutes later; the clouds OPENED up.  SO YES, I’m a BAD BOY at the moment and will have to face these guys at work this week… eeek! I guess for future events; I just need to not commit meeting up with anyone or preplan to hang with anyone and just do my ride. BUT, it’s still… MY BAD! ;-)

What is USS recumbent?

Hello EZ, I’m fairly new in Recumbents and am wondering what the terminology USS recumbent means? Signed Eric

Hello Eric, thanks for your email. USS basically means under seat steering on a recumbent; as you can see here in the photo. My first performance bike was a USS Vision recumbent seen at this link. The concept was actually very good, in that your arms were in a relaxed state at all times; but sometimes tight / quick steering situations proved to be DICY. The industry generally feel out of Love for USS bikes as sales were never that good.

Blog appearance issue?

Hummm, well I’m not sure what the glitch was, but it seems to have cleared up for now. However I am using a rather outdated browser at work, until I get upgraded with the use of 2… computers in front of me… :-@ So that might have been the issue. Tune in tomorrow folks and we will see what we see! Thanks again for the emails about this.

Hummm… :-)

Time to send certain Friends… emails to the trash! :-@

You know, I do get a lot of bicycle related email from numerous bicycling friends; BUT then there are those… that just (Apparently) don’t know me that well. Got emails from certain so-called friends looking for me at the planned CM event today. Surly the majority of you all know that I’m PRO bicycle orientated and that IDIOT events like this, HARM the bicycling cause, period! As I’ve said in numerous posts, pissing people off by holding them up in traffic, while you ride your bike disobeying traffic laws, will NOT gain their respect for you or bicycling! If you went out and participated, that’s your right to do so; BUT don’t look for me to be out there and DON’T send me emails concerning this anti bicyclist endeavor! :-@ Now for those that did; your emails will now be filtered to my garbage folder. BIE!

OT – BUT kinda neat!

Today was clearly a pretty cool day, calendar wise. And we won’t see another until 11/11/11. :-)

Nice Bicycling attire…! :-P

WOW! I guess they do things in Belgium a little different… Here’s the link to my fellow bent rider Friend John Riley’s photos on this unique event; New Belgium Tour de Fat! Nice photos there John! Update 0 10-11-2010 - Humm, rack this up as a senior moment for EZ. John has advised me, this event took place in San Francisco... as in the USA. WELL I guess that's still pretty common bicycling attire for there too.. ;-P (Thanks for the enlightenment John!)

WOW! EZ! You looked Ready and then WHIPPED!

Hey EZ, I just recently found your site and was also checking out some of your photos over at Photobucket and came upon a few, seen here. You looked really ready TO GO in the one photo and then like a whipped puppy in the other! Is there a post about this?Signed Rebecca.

LOL, Hello Rebecca, welcome to my site and my photobucket site too. I don’t do much photo posting there; as I now use some separate blog sites for photo posts. Yep, I clearly remember those photos and those moments! Absolutely the BEST Cycling event I have ever participated in! Here’s the link to the post, that had me able to last for 16 hours on my bike; BUT in 20 / 30 degree weather! BRRRRRRRR!

Update on Ultra Cyclist “Plumbing” technique!

WHAT, you may as does this photo here have to do with bicycling in general? A few years ago, I responded to an inquiry: What do cyclists do... when they have to go...??? :-0  Now there’s a post at BROL, External Catheter that specifically outlines all that’s required to achieve this “Plumbed” status! Caution, you might not wan to advise you fellow cyclists that you are plumbed or at least fall back a little, when it’s time to go with the flow… ;-P

Recumbent Trike Of the Future?

Move over mountain bikes, there’s a new predator in the woods and it’s called the Lightfoot Ranger. Here’s some action pack video of this little beastie caught in action, roaming the woods!!! Find out more about this animal… at the following link! Thanks to BROL poster Richard Ehrlich for posting this at the Bigfoot offroad video.

They just got $1,000,000 from Google!

WELL, I guess someone had to get that money… From BROL poster bikinbill at the Recumbent Monorail Gets Funded thread, this ingenious contraption has at least put the philosophy of “Recumbent” into someone’s ear. I bet this is something that might even be used at the Google campus. My only concern was, what if Mother nature decides it’s THAT time and you are in the middle of tube traffic… ;-X Here’s the link for the company involved in this unique endeavor. :-)

BREAKING News! SHAME! On a certain auto club! :-(

A short time ago, I received a VERY UPSETTING email from Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, concerning a certain Automobile association. Quote: “The American Automobile Association (AAA) wants Congress to cut long-standing programs that support trails, biking and walking in order to divert those funds to the highway system.” HEY! AAA, there are some of us that don’t bow to the almighty Vehicle as being the only world we exist in and for! Why don’t you worry about your own funding and quit trying to influence others to steal funds from a trying to keep the planet Earth GREEN industry!

You know, it may be time for me to BOOT another organization to the curb, just like I did with those LOSERS at AARP! (For caving in on President Abominations Socialistic Health Care garbage!)

OT - Hope I don’t get banned from the Blogosphere! :-0

Quote: “(Newser) – Some American schools are banning students from wearing rubber bracelets that read "I (heart) boobies"—a slogan for a breast-cancer awareness campaign. They're afraid of that word, which is silly.”

I likewise believe it’s silly, especially when in a lot of schools these days, (Sexuality wise) is already through the roof!  In this day and age, any kind of slogan or saying (Tastefully done – Which I believe this is) that can get the publics attention to a serious disease, is a positive reinforcing winner in my book. By the way, October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month; which EVERY MONTH should be, through out the year!!!

In fact I’ll choose this type of advertising / slogan or visual aid over A LOT of the mentally flat line commercials shown on TV these days. Like the DREEB that won’t talk to anyone until he has his coffee and then is all warm and fuzzy afterwards! Can we say Mentally FLAT LINE! :-P
