New way to fix Bicycle flats!!! Use Weed… :-0

Hummm, from the get go this actually sounds like a pretty ingenious idea; especially if you are out in the middle of nowhere! Found this interesting article at Cyclelicious, titled: Fixing a flat: Stuff it with weed. BUT I REALLY and honestly believe using “GRASS” like the legal kind, that grows wild on the side of the road (NO, not the other KIND of grass… that can be found on the side of the road too…) makes for a pretty good, at least you can get you back home, Happy ending. :-) I guess someone took the suggestion a little TOO serious and tried to use the other… kind of GRASS… :-0

BREAKING News! zMOTION sets up Wonderful Benefit Ride For Josie! :-)

On March 17th, 2010, 15 year old Josie Lou Ratley was the victim of a brutal crime when she was confronted by a teenage boy who beat her until she was unconscious after school.

One of Broward’s REALLY upcoming pro active bicycle organizations (zMOTION) has a GREAT ride event scheduled for this young lady, this Sunday, at 7:30 AM, meeting up at the Cove Restaurant. For more information about this event, please visit this link. :-)

BREAKING News! Rans Tailwind #5 is on the way!

2010-06-24_180706 WELL I FINALLY found a REAL Commute bike! At least one I know I can ride a lot MORE miles then on my fold bike, which I now have up for sale. It seems “4” previously one’s didn’t teach me a lesson, that THIS SPECIFIC BIKE, is a KEEPER! DUUU-Biker here… Here’s the link at the BROL forum, for more on this. :-) HAPPY DAYS ARE HERE AGAIN!!! :-)

Childs (USS – Under Seat Steering) Training Recumbent???

I have always supported the start em out young, as far as getting kids into cycling, regardless as to what kind, upright, recumbent, trike, etc. THIS cute photo caught my eye, from the perspective of what appears to be a USS type of tykes recumbent. Read more about this at the following link. :-)

How is a SLOWEST bike race… run?

Dear EZ Biker, I have just gotten a new bike for my Birthday and I really LOVE it. It’s not a recumbent. but maybe someday I’ll be getting one of those. In the meantime, I’ve heard about a certain kind of bike race(?) called the slowest bike race. Now I understand how the fastest bike race is done, but I’m curious on how a slow bike event is put on? Signed: Van

Van Thanks for your email and Congratulations on your new bike. Regardless as to weather it’s a recumbent or not, is NO BIG Deal! You got a bike and that’s the BEST part! So about your SLOWEST Bike question. The object is to be the “last bike” past the finish line. You try and go as SLOW as you can, without having your feet touch the ground. Once they do, you are out of the race. To best demonstrate this kind of event, here’s a great You Tube Video, to check out!

And you WONDER why more bike shops won’t carry recumbents? :-( :-( :-( - EZ Biker RANTS… :-/

After seeing the following post at BROL, about a certain recumbent manufacturer slashing their prices, (That you can buy directly from them); I come away with very MIXED feelings about this. First I realize that ALL your present recumbent bike manufacturers are not HUGE  bicycle company conglomerates. I also accept that $$$ needs to be coming in as much as possible. There surely are risks, BUT that’s to be expected in any kind of unique, new or different venture. If you are a new manufacturer, you clearly have to decide on weather to sell factory direct or try and find some shops to carry your product. However, once you do achieve a network of stores to sell your product; you really have to face up to the reality, that still offering your product direct from the factory is surely a NO NO. (Unless {MAYBE} there’s no dealers in some remote parts of the world) But even then, they should be directed to buy from a dealer, as close as possible to them. I can’t tell you, of ALL THE TIMES I have met, rode and talked with bike shop owners, that tell me, THIS IS ONE OF THE MAIN REASONS, I WON’T SELL RECUMBENTS IN MY STORE! I can’t and won’t compete with factory direct selling. While I mean no ill will towards this recumbent manufacturer; (Especially since I have owned, ridden and enjoyed numerous bikes of theirs) BUT I have to wonder if they REALLY thought this factory direct LOW BALL pricing plan through. Now their poor dealers, have bikes that can be purchased (Factory Direct) at the price THEY PAID for them (Or close to) or maybe even CHEAPER! Like my post title above states… And you WONDER why more bike shops won’t carry recumbents? :-( :-( :-(

Examples of different kinds of bents?

different kinds of bents

Hello EZ Biker, I was referred to your site by a few of my cycling friends. I have had some recent back issues and riding a road bike is becoming problematic for me. I’m seriously flirting with a recumbent bicycle and am wondering if there’s any examples of different kinds of recumbents. Signed, Jan

Jan Thanks for your email and I hope your back issues get better real soon. There are all kinds of examples of bents and here’s 2 links that will provide you with examples of them. BROL (Bent Rider On Line) is one and my good Friend over at the recumbent blog, also has a nice post, explaining about the verity of bents available. Also if you want to see all kinds of bents, there's also a post at BROL titled, Post your Bike, that has TONS of recumbent bike photos! :-)

To all the Dads out there… :-)

In the meantime here is a really GREAT YouTube video, of this REAL CLASS Cyclist!!!

clip_image002Hey EZ, I found the enclosed photo of someone actually using one of those push pedal bikes, that you had done an earlier post on! Your thoughts? Signed Sandy

Sandy, Thanks for your email and very nice… enclosed photo. I’m not sure if I would be interested in one of those kinds of bikes, BUT that female cyclist can go up and down my block anytime. :-) :-) :-)

RAAM Whiners need to take a CHILL pill…

For some reason there seems to be a lot MORE BROL poster RAAM WHINERS this year. RAAM should do this, they should do that, why don't they do this another way, bents aren't getting enough coverage, what they really need to do is blah, blah, blah, blah, blah... It's inspiring to know we have so many that think they could run this event better, in their own way... I'm incline to believe most don't really have a clue, on just what's really involved in putting an event like this together and then ACTUALLY surviving through it, without losing your sanity... Before moving to Florida, I can remember when I was on a bicycle clubs planning team for their annual century event. WHAT AN ABSOLUTE ONGOING PAIN IN THE BUTT, HAVING TO DEAL WITH NEVER ENDING ISSUES and always something that comes out of nowhere and surprises you. And this is ongoing, before, during and even after the event has concluded. And that's just a one day event! I can't EVEN IMAGINE having to deal with all the issues and logistics for a week plus!

Admittedly I'm not sure where or how RAAM receives their $ funding, but I'm pretty sure it's not from any government or financially well off foundation source. And in these difficult financial times; I'm seeing a lot of annual events either down sizing or being discontinued, due to sponsors cutting back their contributions / sponsorship for events. I believe what minimal funding RAAM has to work with, they have and continue to put on one HELL OF A GREAT SHOW!

I'd like to offer a "Friendly" suggestion to those that believe they can put on a better RAAM event... Open your wallet and/or donate your time and be part of the RAAM event! BUT keep in mind, this event is a "year round" planning ordeal. And if that's not in your mindset; then at least consider, taking a CHILL pill, sit back and ENJOY this wonderful Bicyclist endurance spectacle AND STOP ALL THE WHINING!!!

I DON’T have a problem with this!

Hello EZ, have you seen the latest attack on bicyclists by the evil gas powered vehicle empire, at the following BROL thread? Signed: Hugh

Hugh, Thanks for your email and info on the bike lane issue. As much as I’m a PRO Bike supporter, I LIKE AND SUPPORT BIKE LANES! I don’t have a problem with staying in a bike lane or riding on the right side of the road, for 3 simple reasons.  Safety, speed and survival! Bicyclists clearly can’t maintain a steady higher speed like motor vehicles can. The result is the come up on a farm tractor syndrome.  Plus, bikes (And more importantly. bicyclists themselves)  really have NO CHANCE of winning, (Or even survival) should they collide with thousands of more lbs of vehicle. Bike lanes are not 100% perfect; but they do provide a minimal separation or guide line between bikes and motor vehicles. If this legislation motivates more bike lanes being produced throughout Florida roadways; I don’t have a problem with it.

BREAKING News… SO SAD to see the Demise of a Wonderful Event!

image Well, I'm SORRY to report that the annual Lauren Katzenstein Celebration Ride has been discontinued. This was one of my more favorite events (Yes, even in daylight hours!) I liked doing. I was planning on doing another ride from my home to the event this year, but I guess those plans will change now. To the parents of this Extraordinary Person, you all are to be congratulated for putting on such a splendid event for the many years you did and Her Memory to all of us will surely continue on forever! :-)

The GOOD and possibly BAD… side for this product…

WELL the Cell Phone INFESTATION continues to explore new territories to move into and now bicycling is apparently targeted.  I happened onto this gadget at gizmag and at best I have MIXED Feelings about it. (Hence my yellow no sign label) The GOOD, is this type of charger with bicycle would come in real handy in a hurricane time or when power is out for any length of time. You would still be able to charge your phone (If it’s a Nokia…) with your bicycle pedal power. The BAD side is you get one of THOSE types of humans that are tethered to their phone during the week and now they can remain so, when bicycling… YUK! I can see it now, some one using group talk or reading, maybe even trying to text, while bicycling… :-( :-( :-(

Hummmm, has Rans seen this design? ;-)

Ha! OK, that was kind of a funny ha ha OK? This is just one of many interesting looking bikes at the thread hot chicks on recumbents, which apparently has some, that can’t tell the difference of what species on a RECUMBENT, the tread was all about. Besides that, uprights likewise have found their way into this thread and I posted one there too! And YES, my so-called Wholesome… (I’m considered the evil twin) has dropped a post there too!

Hummm, RAAM Surely wouldn’t be WELCOME HERE!!! :-/

WELL, here’s a dismaying article collected from Cyclelicious, titled: Bikes banned in Colorado town roads. I don’t imagine there’s too many bicycle shops in that… town either… :-(

Update! 6/15/10 This story has found it’s way on to BROL at the following link.

Cyclists gain RESPECT in another Metropolis! :-)

From BROL poster xray – Indy gets new bike laws. Once again, another metropolis has seen fit to make it known, that cyclists still have a place in this fast paced / gas powered vehicle dominated society. In Indianapolis new laws went into effect on the first. “The ordinances say bike lanes are to be used exclusively for bicycles and that cyclists have the right of way in those lanes. The ordinances also prohibit driving, standing or parking in a bike lane or bike path. They also establish a minimum passing distance of 3 feet for vehicles passing a cyclist. “ Here’s the link to read more about this.

Hey EZ, Here’s the CLWB you are looking for!

Hey EZ, I visit your site often and really enjoy it. I saw your recent BROL posts: Vision R32... A Bike Back from the Future and A SAD trend developing... and it seems like you might be in the market for one of those illusive CLWB (Compact Low Wheel Base Bikes) type of bikes. Have you ever seen or checked out a Spirit by Hpvelotechnik? It looks pretty sporty and might fulfill your CLWB needs. Signed Sandra

Hello Sandra, thanks for your email and YES, I have seen and continue to check out your suggested bike called a Spirit. I would be VERY INTERESTED in this bike to the point of purchasing one at THIS VERY MOMENT… except for “ONE” thing. That CURVED frame tube. :-( YUK! The reason? Even though I’m about 5’9” and probably wouldn't have a height issue; just imagine all the MORE height challenged buyer potential, this bike could offer to them. Now if they ever straighten that tube out, like you see in the old Vision R32, my order for one will be immediate! HEY HPvelotechnik, are your listening?

AlRIGHT! My kind of FUN Cycling with Friends!!!

I found this really Great cycling photo at the following, very nice blog titled:

Our local SFRR group makes the news!

There has been a lot of chatter at the SFRR (South Florida Recumbent Riders) Yahoo group about a LOST ride event. WELL it now has even made the local news column, thanks to Sun Sentinel’s columnist Nick Sortal. Nice article and Great event you all!!!

Saturday, June 05, 2010

OK… I’ve GOT your number…..

I did up and posted this photo at BROL a few weeks back and now find use for it, after today's ride… Now folks, I’m really an EZ… bicycling kind of guy and I go out of my way NOT to bother or even interfere with others, while out cycling. BUT, then sometimes you encounter a few that, well are basically WISE As… and love to harass, especially if it gets an acknowledgement from their included group. So out on A1A at about 6: AM, (Not thinking there would be any As… out this early… ;-) I come up on about 7 bicyclists. Now I don’t go BLASTING past them, playing the role of RABBIT, catch me if you can attitude; but eventually make my way, casually past them. So one of the Lance Armstrong wanna be’s, pops off, hey there, nice special needs bike person, how are you. I’m fine, thank you. So what affliction do you have, that you now can’t ride a REAL Bike. (Ooooooh, boy…. here we go…) Up wrong Jerk off, avoidance syndrome, I reply. Hey! You don’t have to get all rude here! No problem, good bye and I then pick up the pace. WELL, here they are, coming up on me, FAST and then past, with As… stating, if you really want to go fast, you need a real bike. No problem, to which I then proceed to hang on their tail. 18, 20, 22, 25, 25, 25 25… mph, that’s it? This lasts for another 15 minutes and by now, I realize, I HAVE their number. SO then, I proceed to veer to the left, drop my gear and ease past the group at 29 mph. The CHASE was on! Hummm, I see a lot of rotation back there, (Cyclist pulling out of the lead, going to the back, letting a fresh one pull the pack for attack) But they are not really gaining on me. For grins…, I kick it up to 31, for a little insurance space. This little confrontation lasts for about another 20 minutes, when suddenly the group fades really fast, in my mirror. A few miles later, I reach Spanish River turn around and see the... group, about 10 minutes later on my return ride. I get at least one “Finger” salute from the pack, which I ignore and proceed back, with a smile on my face. Yep, there’s still some life left in this old special needs cyclist!!! :-) :-) :-)

Hummmm, perhaps EZ Biker could be Bi-Polar Biker? ;-)

OK, I really need to do a follow up and LIGHTEN UP from my previous RANT post… There goes my continued attempts to keep this blog positive… SO I’m clearly on a roll here, as my so-called TWIN… (Amish Biker…) has taken aim and shot across the bow at my FAVORITE online recumbent website, BROL. The thread hot chicks on recumbents, has gotten lots of posts (Including one from the… so-called EVIL Twin… ME…) and visits! BUT seriously, it’s a really entertaining thread; so of course my somewhat wacked out humor had to jump in and stir the pot a little!!! :-) I’m looking forward to a really NICE LONG RIDE, today! :-) :-) :-)

OT - REAL CLASS Act… BP & The World at large… EZ Biker RANTS!!!

You know, while my photo clearly takes aim at BP, they are CLEARLY (Or should that be TAINTEDLY) not the only one’s at fault here! It’s amazing the sheer number of oil wells we have dotting the gulf and other oceans, along with those in the Middle East. And yet we as a society still  can’t quench our LUSTING THURST for MORE MORE MORE oil! And yes, there’s been some brief flashes of alternative energy attempts, only to see them get kicked to the wayside and back to our (Cocaine addiction attitude) of oil. OOOH, we have all the oil in the world and it will never run out and we LOVE paying ANY PRICE WE HAVE TO, to get our PLEASURABLE FIX of oil… MMMMMMMMMM. OHHHHH YESSSSSSS…

This latest gulf debacle SHOULD BE A WAKE UP CALL! We are surely looking at the potential of a DEAD Sea there. What if this TRAGIC happenstance is repeated again and again in the Gulf or somewhere else in the world? A world wide DEAD SEA, will end ALL LIFE for you and me! And finally, do you honestly believe BP’s (Self Serving) BLING of sincere advertising whining, how sorry we are for this boo boo, but we will make it alright again, will bring back the sea, bird and eco life that’s already SUFFERING and DYING?! Sadly, it will take SOMETHING reaching the TIPPING point, before we as a STUPID species, FINALLY wise up, that maybe we should have, taken being MORE GREEN, MORE SERIOUSLY… :-( :-( :-(

When does RAAM Start?

image Hello EZ Biker; glad your computer issues are over and you are back posting again. I’m wondering when RAAM (Race Across America) will be starting? Signed Oscar

Hello Oscar, Thanks for your email and YES, I too am anxiously awaiting for the start of RAAM! Hopefully BROL will setup another great thread for all to check in to and keep up with this SUPER Bicycling event!

Be CAREFUL what you post in public………. :-0

image Well here’s a Thread at BROL (Need help with scumball identification) that’s getting a lot of looks, responses and most likely will end up LOCKED, before too long.  OK, I have replaced the actual license tag letters with my own thoughts… But now for that bumper sticker…, while perfectly legal  via Freedom Of Speech here in the USA, it clearly HINTS of a person with some serious disturbing emotional issues. Interestingly, should this vehicle operator ever really be involved in a bicycle / vehicle encounter, the on the scene Law Enforcement authorities will probably take an interest in this bumper sticker. And should this happenstance find it’s way into a court room; this person will have already revealed their REAL attitude and mannerism towards cyclists…

Coming to a Theater near you soon!!! ;-) ;-) ;-) Plus a tribute to Dennis Lee Hopper (May 17, 1936 – May 29, 2010)

OOOOH YEEEEA THER BAAAABIE! The long awaited Easy Rider movie sequel is on the way! The B & W photo was posted by BROL poster calstuts, with the title thread being: Easy Rider fortieth anniversary extra. I posted a little bigger size photo at Google Docs. Admittedly I had previously composed this, months ago and now SADLEY, one of the equal greats in the original movie, Dennis Hopper has passed on. :-(  I therefore dedicate this post to this Great and Talented person! World Naked Bicycle Month!!!

You know EZ Biker Friends, I’m not sure if I would really have the NERVE to do this event; BUT with what has recently been happening in the Gulf Of Mexico; I’m just about MAD enough and fed up with this world’s GOOFY oil addiction; to seriously consider participating in such an event!!!! Here by the way is a link to planned NNBR events for 2010. Here’s another link for WNBR from the wiki site and the official WNBR site link. (Caution, you might not want to view THIS like while at work)

WOW! 10 Years and Counting BROL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I got the following email from B. Ball of BROL today: A recent thread on the message board about the now mostly defunct alt.rec.bicycles.recumbent newsgroup got me thinking about the old days before 'BentRider. It also made me realize that this site has been around for 10 years now! I have no idea how I let that anniversary pass me by. I guess it's just been one of those years! Anyway... Thanks everyone! I have the best job in the world and I couldn't do it without the support that all of you give me. Whether its monetary, offering up help with the site or just by sending a nice email... All of it is greatly appreciated.

ALRIGHT BRYAN!!! Congratulations and here’s hoping for another additional and Wonderful 10 year reunion!!! :-)
